She did not look back at me. 

I have often thought of that moment.  Tried to work it out.  What I believe is she imagines herself as Boo.  She believes there is something she is going to do that will be her purpose in life.  The special thing she is going to do is what gives her hardships meaning.  The special thing is why she comes to meet every ferry.  I remember thinking I hope to god her special thing is not waiting for a man, because I know men and they are not worth waiting a week for, let alone ten years.
